Hello new friends, it's time to cheer, we're starting school—our big new year!
We’ll learn to count and write and read, and help each other when in need.
We’ll paint and play and sing a song, and know that here, we all belong.
Life is busy in Year 1 and we get up to all sorts of things......
*** We have lots of fun with our friends ***
We are all artists - such super self portraits!
Our first topic is 'Our Colourful World' and we are looking at different colours all around us.
We read a story about 10 back dots, we had to use our imagination and make up our own black dot pictures...are you impressed?! We also designed and decorated our own Baa Baa Black Sheep pictures. We ripped paper to make animal patterns - can you guess which is a cow, a panda or maybe a zebra?
Look at our colourful name writing display! Can you find mine?
As part of our colour topic we have been exploring light and dark. Can you see our shadows in the sun...we worked in pairs to do some chalk shadow art in the playground.
The 'Rainbow Fish' story is a favourite in year 1. (Click on his picture above to get a link to an online story) We love his colourful shiny scales.
It teaches us how important it is to be a good friend and to share with others.
We heard all about Joseph and his lovely colourful coat. Do you like our colourful coat designs? We used felts, paint and the computer. Best of all we made colourful sprinkle biscuits...so yummy!
We had a great day at Gortin Glen Forest Park ....we walked the Gruffaol trail, collected cones for squirrels, built a hedgehog house, said hello to some deer, had our packed lunch and enjoyed a visit to the playpark. It was an action packed day and some of us even had a snooze on the bus journey home!
Autumn leaves, red, yellow, orange and brown gently falling to the ground!
We have had great fun learning about Elmer the colourful patchwork Elephant...the story reminded us that we are all unique and that makes us all special!
Another favourite story in our colour topic is Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do You See? We made story telling puppets to help us remember all the colourful animals in the story.
We all enjoyed our colourful jelly and sprinkles party to finish off our topic work for this term...not even a spoonful left!
For our new class topic we will be going...'DOWN IN THE WOODS'.
Come along with us for a woodland adventure!
'O Little Town of Bethlehem' Nativity performers!
What a talented bunch of actors and singers. Everyone did a brilliant job...we are so proud of you all for your superstar performance.
Lets meet our fabulous cast
Our little acting superstars.... Don't they just look the part!
Festive fun, food and friends!
Ho Ho Ho ....the big man in red is back,
and we are so glad he did not forget his sack!
Happy Christmas wishes to all our Year 1 families and friends from everyone in Year 1 xx
A snowy start to 2026...we got busy making a new calendar and some cute snowmen!
Veronica the Dental Hygienist came to visit and tell us all about the importance of looking after our teeth - eating healthy foods and cleaning our teeth. We all got a new toothpaste and a toothbrush. We even got to brush Roo the Kangaroo's teeth!
Our new topic is Fabulous Fashion for the term ahead....get your glad rags on and help us explore a little more about clothes.
Discovery play ..... matching, threading, designing, building, reading......
We had lots of themed stories including: Handa's suprise (this story helped us explore different outfits for different countries and climates) Mrs Honey's Hat (we enjoyed thinking about what she had and what she has now on her hat) also Barty's Scarf (we learnt about wool, we made scarves for Barty and made woolly wrapped sheep models)
Thanks Declan for showing us and telling Year 1 all about the protective clothing you wear in the school kitchen. We had great fun having a school canteen role play area.
To link with our Internet safety focus we thought about lots of different ways to keep safe in lots of situations. Little Red Riding Hood helped us to explore the importance of making good choices. We thought about how we can pause and think...is it safe? Is it true?
What shoe size are you?
We did some measuring to see what length different things were in our class
We did a test to see what materials were waterproof. I don't think anyone wanted woolly wellies! We made waterproof welly puddle pictures with wax crayons.
To finish off our fabulous Fashion topic we had a go at designing and making our own hats...we had to follow instructions on how to fold! Catwalk ready!
We are moving our bodies in PE this term and look how well we can balance, climb, jump, roll,... in our gymnastics lessons
Rois (Much Ado) was so impressed with our Verse Speaking when we said our 'Higglety, Pigglety, Pop" poem. She loved the fun of the words and our facial expressions. Well done everyone!
Congratulations to Lilly and Jacob who came joint first in Year 1 and overall in Foundation!
We had good fun in class today celebrating 'Pancake Tuesday'. We were flipping pancakes in a pan, we listened to a story about 'The Big Runaway Pancake' and we made funny pancake food art faces. They were yummy!

We had musical concerts with performers from our own talented pupils as well as Samantha Mitchell and the Ulster Orchestra...What a show...Edwards certainly has talent!
We all got creative and designed our own tote bags. Cat walk worthy designs!
Our project challenge as part of creativity week got us thinking and designing how to use recycled objects and transform them into transport models....WOW! such 'out of the box' thinking (both pupils and parents! Thank you all for your help!)
Look at our fabulous transport models!....more to follow!
As part of our 'ON THE MOVE' transport topic we have been drawing some vehicles in ICT...do you recognise any?
